A Million Dollar Verdict For a Medical Malpractice Claim in Maryland

When it comes to the work a personal injury lawyer does, there is one goal every attorney has in common, and that goal is to obtain a settlement for their client.  Most lawyers choose to represent a client – in most cases – when they feel confident that a claim is viable and when they truly believe the likelihood of getting that settlement is high.

We’re no different here at the Lapidus Law Firm, but we add an extra layer to our goals.  We don’t just aim for a settlement; we aim to get a fair and reasonable settlement.   We work tirelessly to ensure that happens, and when it does, we’re elated to share the news with our audience.

How The Verdict Came To Be

The most recent verdict our trial team received was, indeed, fair and reasonable, to the tune of $1 million. It happened in Charles County. Our team had an uphill battle, going up against a.Medstar corporate entity for the wrongdoing of certain medical professionals employed by that corporation.

As a result of their malpractice, our client was unable to work, thus forcing him to take an early retirement and leave a job he loved. They caused him acute and persistent pain that lingered for months after his treatment had ended.   An economist testified that he lost $587,000 in wage-earning capacity plus $400,038 more in pain and suffering.

The case was a challenging one, to say the least. Medstar’s very capable and well-financed lawyers from a large national insurance defense firm challenged our client’s claim with every textbook defense imaginable. Their problem was that their defense legal theories did not apply to the facts of our case.

When it came time for the jury to deliberate, we felt good about our efforts and were hopeful for a positive outcome. The 6 person jury deliberated for approximately two and a half hours before returning the verdict in favor of our client.
