Lyft Accident Law Firm

Let’s face it…rideshare services like Lyft are incredibly convenient. Using Lyft saves us the hassle of finding parking in the city, hailing a cab, or driving to a train station. Best of all, you can schedule a ride in seconds with your phone. Lyft vehicles are generally clean, and the drivers are often friendly, providing information and recommendations about the various places in the DC Metro area.

For those Lyft drivers, this convenient service makes for a win/win.  Riders get to where they are going, and the driver earns money for each ride, as well as tips.

With rideshare services growing in popularity in recent years, odds are most of us have taken advantage of their services for any number of reasons. And more than likely, the thought of being involved in an accident while using Lyft rarely crosses anyone’s mind. But these accidents happen more often than you think.

Lyft Accident Headlines

September of 2025 saw a horrible accident, where the driver, the passenger, and the passenger’s dog were all 3 killed in an accident caused by a drunk driver. According to azfamily.com, the incident occurred in Gilbert, Arizona.

Authorities said Thursday that Robb Hintzsche, 35, is facing two counts of second-degree murder, felony endangerment and animal cruelty for the deadly wreck that happened on Sept. 19 near Recker and Ray roads. Police said he drove drunk at more than three times the legal limit.

Police said on that day, Nicole Snell, 36, was working as a rideshare driver and had picked up Marisa Jorgenson, 33. Investigators believe Snell was headed northbound on a green light when she was hit by Hintzsche, who ran a red light driving westbound at speeds estimated between 89 mph and 96 mph.

Just a few months prior, another Lyft driver and the passenger were also killed in an accident  This one, in Dallas, Texas. According to wfaa.com, “The train struck the driver’s side of the SUV, pushing the vehicle about 150 yards down the track. Its bumper was torn away, left behind near the intersection—a grim marker of where the tragedy began. Two people in the car died at the scene, officials said. Lyft later confirmed that a driver employed with the company and a passenger were killed in the crash. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office released the names of both victims. The medical examiner identified the driver as 41-year-old Elio Jose Acosta Rojas and the passenger as 50-year-old Melissa Rose Campanella.”

Both incidents are heartbreaking and totally avoidable. And the harsh reality is, their families are left to pick up the pieces.  For the passengers who died, Lyft’s insurance will most definitely be a discussion amongst the attorneys representing both Lyft and the victims’ families.  But what happens if there are no fatalities, and you’re injured?  What happens next?

What Happens If I’m a Lyft Passenger in an Accident?

The top priority is your health. Regardless of how serious the accident is, if you think you’ve been injured, call 911 and get medical attention at the scene, if at all possible. This is important for your well-being, first and foremost, but it’s also critical to have your injuries documented when filing an injury claim.

If you’re unable to be evaluated at the scene for some reason, get to your doctor or an ER as soon as possible–only a medical professional will be able to assess the extent of your injuries.

After a Lyft accident, it is important to document the driver’s full legal name and residential address. While the Lyft app may only display a first name, that is not sufficient if a legal claim becomes necessary. You do not need to request insurance information from the driver, as it is publicly available and can be obtained later. If a lawsuit is required, the claim is typically filed against the driver rather than Lyft itself. It is also critical to document any time missed from work due to your injuries. Even if you used sick leave or vacation time and continued to receive a paycheck, that lost time still has real value and should be accounted for in any potential settlement.

Next, call your insurance company to report the accident. No need to worry about rising premiums or rates– the at-fault driver’s insurance should cover your injury expenses as well as pain and suffering and/or lost wages. Once you’ve reported the incident to your insurance company, call the experienced Lyft injury lawyers at The Lapidus Law Firm.

What NOT to Do After a Lyft Accident

Do NOT, under any circumstances, speak to anyone else’s insurance company besides your own until you have talked to an experienced lawyer, like those at The Lapidus Law Firm.

Here’s why: Lyft, like any other business in the world, is about making money, not giving it away. Their insurance companies work for Lyft, not you, so they have Lyft’s best interests in mind…not yours. That means their insurance companies will most likely make you a lowball offer to settle. This is something you should not accept without the advice of a lawyer at The Lapidus Law Firm.

As an innocent passenger, you’re entitled to a fair and reasonable settlement. Lyft’s insurance company will offer you a settlement, but it probably won’t be fair or reasonable. That’s where The Lapidus Law Firm can help you.
