Maryland Spinal Cord Injury Attorney
Did you know…. September was National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month? According to the National Day Calendar, “National Spinal Cord Injury Month (National SCI Awareness Month) in September honors the courage of those with spinal cord injuries and their families. The observance also aims to educate the general public regarding SCI and improve the support for those with SCI.”
Here at The Lapidus Law Firm, we too are aiming to educate the public about SCI, and how the legal process might unfold for someone who experiences a spinal cord injury because of someone else’s negligence, and, there is some promising research for spinal cord injury victims.
A New Clinical Trial for Spinal Cord Injuries
Research is currently underway at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis to determine if surgically rerouting the nerves of those suffering from a spinal cord injury in the neck can restore hand and arm function.
According to the WashU Medicine website, “Each participant will undergo surgery to attach a nerve from above the site of injury to nerves below the site of injury that connect to muscles in the hands and arms. The patients then will participate in regular physical therapy for the next two years. Every six months, the researchers will measure participants’ ability to extend and turn their arms and grip with their hands. By analyzing the results of the surgery in a large group of people, the researchers hope to identify the optimal time after injury to perform the procedure, which kinds of injuries are best treated with this approach, and other factors that affect how much hand and arm function people regain.”
The trial will enroll 70 people who are victims of neck spinal cord injuries.
About Spinal Cord Injuries
Spinal cord injuries can happen to anyone unexpectedly. If you have suffered a spinal cord injury, you know just how debilitating it can be. Spinal cord injuries are never mild, but even those that don’t leave you incapacitated can have long-term negative effects. The physical, social, and financial impacts are very real.
These injuries are especially common in car accidents. If you have been in an automobile or other type of accident in Maryland and your spine was injured, you will need to contact a Maryland spinal cord injury attorney as soon as possible.
Causes of Spinal Cord Injury
There are several ways that your spinal cord can be injured. They include but are not limited to:
- Car accidents
- Slips and falls
- Sports injuries
- And more
If your injury is the result of an accident or another party’s negligence, it is important that you know your rights and what you can do to receive a fair financial settlement.
Communicating with Insurance Companies
If you have been in a car accident that resulted in spinal cord injury, you or the responsible party’s insurance company will need to be contacted regarding a claim to cover your medical expenses, lost wages, physical therapy, and more. The problem is the insurance company is not on your side.
While many insurance adjusters boast about caring for their customers, the truth is that it is their job to make a profit and keep as much money in the insurance company’s banks as possible.
Why You Need An Attorney
Your Maryland spinal cord injury attorney will communicate with the insurance company on your behalf to work toward a reasonable settlement. They will work as your advocate so you can focus on your physical and mental recovery and relieve the stress of pushing for what you know you deserve.
An experienced attorney will inform you of your rights and advise you on the best course of action based on the circumstances surrounding your injury. They will also represent you in court if that becomes necessary to settle your claim. We highly recommend that you don’t attempt to communicate with the insurance company on your own. They have their own attorneys with far more experience than most victims.
