Neighbors Speak Out About Fatal Accidents in Montgomery County

Early on the morning of December 22, a 53-year-old man from Silver Spring was struck by a vehicle as he was crossing Georgia Avenue, just south of the intersection of University Boulevard West, in Wheaton. The man died from his injuries at a nearby hospital later that day.

Sadly, this is only the most recent incident in an area that has seen more than its share of pedestrian fatalities–and local residents are demanding action.

A Dangerous Road

Montgomery County crash data reveal at least 28 serious or fatal pedestrian or cyclist accidents since 2015. And that’s just within a half-mile of the intersection where this latest tragedy occurred. That number has residents outraged and wanting changes made in the name of safety.

Despite recent efforts such as narrowing travel lanes and lowering the speed limit from 30 MPH to 25 MPH, these types of incidents keep happening. Reports say one Wheaton resident commented after this incident, “It’s the speed and the traffic. People do not slow down along here.”

Ultimately, the improved safety of Georgia Avenue in Wheaton is up to Montgomery County officials. Still, it’s clear that something needs to be done to improve driver, pedestrian, and cyclist safety in this area.

What About the Victims’ Families?

Perhaps lost in all of the justified uproar and demands for change that resulted from this latest tragedy, what about the family of the victim of this accident? Or the families of the other 28 pedestrians who were killed just a stone’s throw from this incident?

They’re dealing with the aftermath and the heartbreak of not having their loved one in their lives anymore. And while nothing can change that, it’s still important for families of victims to contact a personal injury lawyer to help with the legal aspects of their loss.

Not for the possibility of money, though that can certainly help pay for bills and expenses that may now be adding up… It’s about trying to right a wrong and preventing these types of avoidable tragedies from happening to other families.

How a Skilled Personal Injury Lawyer Can Help

Nothing in life is guaranteed, and that includes settlements in cases like this. No ethical lawyer will ever promise a settlement because there is no guarantee. What an excellent personal injury lawyer will do is promise to work as hard as possible on the victim’s behalf to get justice, whether that’s in the form of a settlement or change.

In many of these situations, families either hesitate to contact an attorney or neglect to altogether because they fear it may be too late to do anything. That might not be the case, however. It’s always worth a call to a skilled, experienced personal injury lawyer to find out whether action can be taken. The Lapidus Law Firm is waiting to help you.
