According to the Centers for Disease Control, “There were over 69,000 TBI-related deaths in the United States in 2021.1 That’s about 190 TBI-related deaths every day.”
The aftermath of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be quite challenging to navigate. Along with the pain of the injury itself, brain injuries can have life-altering consequences. Temporary or permanent disability, medical expenses, diminished quality of life, loss of income due to missed work, the challenge and cost of potential long-term and specialized care.
If someone close to you is going through this, they need a lawyer who has plenty of experience with TBI cases, and that’s what you’ll find at The Lapidus Law Firm.
Recent News on Brain Injuries
UC San Francisco and the San Francisco VA Health Care System conducted a study recently, and it found that 1 in 8 older Americans experience Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). How do these TBI’s occur? Typically by a fall that occurs at the ground level.
The study, published in JAMA Network Open on May 31, 2024 and then on msn.com shortly thereafter, explained that “Researchers followed about 9,200 Medicare enrollees, whose average age was 75 at the start of the study, and found that contrary to other studies of younger people, being female, white, healthier and wealthier was associated with higher risk of TBI.”
The symptoms of a TBI can be quite extensive, but a recent study revealed hearing an vision problems can occur as a result of TBIs, including concussions.
According to the article, published on health.mil, “Sometimes, these hearing and vision injuries are either not immediately apparent or require additional testing to be diagnosed, according to experts from the Defense Health Agency. These injuries may show up together.”
How Do Brain Injuries Occur?
In many cases, traumatic brain injuries are the result of an accident and/or someone else’s negligence. Some of the more common causes of brain injury are:
- Vehicle-related accidents: this can involve multiple vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, and motorcycles. Bike accident victims can easily suffer a head injury.
- Falls: these can happen anytime, anywhere. In a public parking lot, in a store or business, on an icy sidewalk, down a flight of steps. Since falls are so unexpected, it’s challenging to protect your head, which can lead to a dangerous impact.
- Violence: no one wants to think this can or will happen to them, but violence is, unfortunately, a fairly common occurrence. Brain injuries can quickly occur if there’s a blow to the head from a fist or a blunt object, or even a gunshot.
What Should I Do If I Sustain a Brain Injury?
Get medical help immediately. Head injuries are dangerous, so it’s critical you receive medical attention as soon as possible. Symptoms may not always appear serious, and you may feel fine, but if you or someone you know has been involved in any type of accident or incident that resulted in a blow to the head, there’s a chance it could be severe.
Once you’ve received medical attention, you’ll want to get a lawyer to – at the very least – review your case in a free consultation – especially if someone else’s negligence caused the brain injury. But you must choose your DC Law Firm with care; you want an experienced attorney who has successfully represented clients with brain injuries.
