How a Bowie TBI Lawyer Can Help When You Have Been Injured

You’ve been to the doctor and that’s when you heard the news:  that you have a traumatic brain injury – also known as a TBI.  Sounds pretty serious, right?  Well, it is VERY serious, and it is imperative that you follow the doctor’s orders for treatment to increase your chances of a full recovery.

And your doctor may or may not give you another piece of crucial advice:  To contact a Bowie TBI lawyer who can help.

The Most Common TBI

A TBI can occur in many ways, and one of the most common causes is in a car accident.  A rear end, side or head-on collision can cause the car accident victim to strike their head hard enough that the brain is injured as a result of the wreck.

There are many different levels of traumatic brain injuries, some of which are more severe than others.  However, it is important to note that even the least severe TBI should be taken very seriously and never dismissed.  That TBI that is – too often – let go by the injured?  Concussions.

This TBI has been thrust into the spotlight no doubt because of the many NFL players who have opted to quit playing football because of the risk of concussions and other TBIs.  The benefit in their choices to leave the sport isn’t just for them; they have prompted medical professionals and schools to take these injuries very seriously and also encouraged the injured to do the same.

Treatment for a concussion can be difficult sometimes for the injured.  The brain needs time to heal, and just like any other physical injury, as little use as possible is one of the most common and most successful forms of treatment.   And that means – no screen time from televisions, computers or mobile phones, no reading and in many cases, no physical activity.

TBI Facts

According to the Centers for Disease Control, car accidents account for 14% of concussions that occur.  It is imperative that the injured get to a medical professional who provides immediate treatment and just as important that you follow through with their orders.  Brain injuries are directly linked to other health-related problems, such as seizures, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and much more.

Some other facts about brain injuries according to the CDC:

  • Among all age groups, motor vehicle crashes were the third overall leading cause of TBI-related ER visits, hospitalizations, and deaths (14%). When looking at just TBI-related deaths, motor vehicle crashes were the third leading cause (19%) in 2013.
  • Over the span of six years (2007–2013), while rates of TBI-related ER visits increased by 47%, hospitalization rates decreased by 2.5% and death rates decreased by 5%.
