Many people move to the suburbs of the city because they want to be safer, but when it comes to pedestrian accidents, the suburbs don’t always mean a safer existence for pedestrians. This is a sad fact known all to well by your nearby PG County Pedestrian Accident Lawyer in Lanham.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
NPR recently featured a story about pedestrian accidents, and even just the headline is quite startling. The piece, titled, “Pedestrian Accidents Reach Highest Level In Decades” features a quote from Jonathan Adkins, the Executive Director of the Governor’s Highway Safety Association.
“While we have made progress reducing fatalities among many other road users in the past decade, pedestrian deaths have risen 35 percent. The alarm bells continue to sound on this issue; it’s clear we need to fortify our collective efforts to protect pedestrians and reverse the trend.”
Those “alarm bells” Adkins referenced are likely about SUV’s in particular:
“The number of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) involved in pedestrian deaths has increased by 50 percent since 2013. By comparison, (non-SUV) passenger cars’ involvement in pedestrian fatalities increased by 30 percent over the same time period. Although passenger cars still account for the majority of pedestrian deaths, SUVs – which generally cause more severe pedestrian injuries – make up an increasingly large percentage of registered vehicles.”
Common Causes of Pedestrian Accidents
There are many causes of pedestrian accidents. Four of the most common include:
Distracted Driving – This is the most common cause of car accidents. Drivers who are not paying attention because they are texting, eating, talking, changing radio stations… anything that takes their eyes off the road means that the driver is, in fact, distracted.
Speeding – This too is a common cause of many accidents. When a driver is speeding, he/she can lose control of their vehicle and veer into the path of a pedestrian in a matter of seconds.
Driving Under The Influence – “Don’t drink and drive.” Judgment calls are not made well when one is intoxicated – even if just “a little.”
Weather Conditions – Slippery roads can mean that even at low speeds, a driver can lose control of their vehicle and mistakenly hit a pedestrian when they can’t stop in time.
